What Makes an Area Family-Friendly?

School Quality

The single most important factor for most families. Areas with a high proportion of Ofsted Good and Outstanding schools provide confidence that your children will receive quality education without needing to travel far. Our data shows that the top-ranked family areas have 85%+ of nearby schools rated Good or better.

Safety and Low Crime

Feeling safe in your neighbourhood matters for every household, but especially for families with children. Our safety scores use Police.uk crime data normalised by population, with extra weight given to violent crime and anti-social behaviour, the categories most likely to affect daily quality of life.

Green Spaces and Parks

Access to outdoor spaces is essential for children's physical and mental development. We measure the number and proximity of parks, playing fields, playgrounds, and nature reserves within walking distance of each postcode using OpenStreetMap data and local authority records.

Affordability

The best area in the world is no good if you cannot afford to live there. Our affordability metric compares local house prices to local earnings, giving a realistic view of whether a family on a typical income can buy or rent comfortably. Areas like Lancaster and Norwich offer strong family credentials at a fraction of southern prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are family-friendliness rankings calculated?

Our family-friendliness rankings combine four equally weighted factors: school quality (proportion of Ofsted Good/Outstanding schools within 2km), safety (crime rate per 1,000 residents), green spaces (access to parks and open spaces within walking distance), and affordability (house price to earnings ratio). Each factor is scored out of 100, then combined into an overall family score. Towns that perform well across all four dimensions score highest.

What makes an area good for families?

The most important factors for families are typically school quality, safety, access to parks and outdoor spaces, healthcare facilities, and affordability. Beyond the data, families also value community feel, the availability of children's activities and clubs, proximity to family-friendly amenities like libraries and leisure centres, and good transport links for school runs and commuting. Our area reports cover all of these data points for any UK postcode.

Are cities or towns better for families?

Both can work well, depending on your priorities. Smaller towns like Harrogate, Bath, and York consistently rank highly for families due to their combination of excellent schools, low crime, and green spaces. However, cities offer greater access to specialist schools, cultural opportunities, hospitals, and diverse communities. The best approach is to identify specific neighbourhoods within cities that offer a family-friendly environment, which is exactly what our postcode-level reports help with.

How important are schools when choosing where to live?

School quality is the single most cited factor for families choosing a new area. Research from the National Foundation for Educational Research shows that 68% of parents with school-age children consider school quality the most important factor when moving. Proximity to good schools can also add 5-15% to local property values, making it a financially significant decision as well.

Can I find family-friendly areas within my budget?

Yes. Use our Where Should I Live tool to set a budget alongside other priorities like school quality and safety. The tool analyses thousands of postcodes and recommends areas that match your specific criteria. Alternatively, check our cheapest places to live rankings, which include family-relevant data like school scores for each town.

Do these rankings change over time?

Yes. School quality can shift as Ofsted inspection results are updated. Crime trends change, new housing developments bring new families to an area, and council investment in parks and facilities varies. We recalculate rankings regularly using the latest data. The core top 10 tends to be stable, but individual positions can shift by a few places between updates.
